Fishing Tips

Clear Lake is typically clearer from around October to June and then we see more grasses and algae blooms.

Some years there are oxygen depletion driven fish die offs during summer months, seems to me those happen around when the sago grass finishes its season, the plants bolt and expire, leaving plenty of surface cover for fish.

When there's lots of surface stuff, during late summertime, throw swim or topwater baits at dawn and dusk for bass, mid day toss your drop shot in shady spots like the shadow along the pier from the beach or from the pier.

Weed growth starts thinning around September making for easier drags, fewer snags, so you can use your swim baits, etc, with an easier retrieval.

Catfish? Cast anchovy, liver, mackerel, stink bait, or koolaid/jello marinated hot dogs about an hour before sunset and secure your rod, these fish get big. Don’t miss the rod holder on the pier — a tribute to a 25 lb catfish caught and released there.

Pay a bit of attention to time and if you aren't getting hits within a few minutes, cast in another direction, still no bites? Try another spot. Anglers with high ratios tend to move a fair amount. Not a hard and fast rule, we've all got tales to tell.
